17-2-2025 – World Network has officially launched its services in the Philippines, targeting one of the world’s most social media-engaged populations.
The technology firm announced plans to roll out its World ID verification service across the archipelago, following initial trials in Bulacan province. The company reports that its identity verification platform has already secured more than 23 million users worldwide.
The timing of the launch appears strategic, as the Philippines grapples with an unprecedented surge in deepfake-related fraud, which saw a staggering 4,500% increase between 2022 and 2023. World Network’s technology promises to help users authenticate their humanity through biometric scanning, distinguishing genuine users from AI-powered bots.
Industry analysts note that the Philippines presents an ideal market for World Network’s expansion, given the country’s position as a global leader in social media usage. Facebook penetration among Filipino internet users stands at nearly 100%, whilst AI adoption in the workplace continues to rise steadily.
However, the firm’s expansion hasn’t been without controversy. World Network’s operations were suspended in Kenya in 2023 for alleged violations of data protection regulations, particularly concerning informed consent protocols. Similar regulatory challenges have emerged in several other jurisdictions, including France, Portugal, Spain, Hong Kong, Brazil, and South Korea.
Critics, including the MIT Technology Review, have raised concerns about the company’s registration practices in developing nations and the potential risks associated with biometric data collection. The publication highlighted particular concerns regarding data security and surveillance implications.
In response to these criticisms, World Network maintains that its zero-knowledge proof technology ensures secure storage of biometric data on users’ personal devices. The company underwent a significant rebranding exercise in October 2024, launching an enhanced layer 2 network and pledging stronger commitment to data protection compliance.
