7-7-2025 – The Russian Ministry of Energy has begun developing a national registry for cryptocurrency mining equipment to address illegal mining and boost tax compliance, first reported by RIA Novosti. The centralized database, created in partnership with the Federal Tax Service and the Ministry of Digital Development, will track all mining rigs across the country to ensure adherence to regulations.
The initiative targets unauthorized mining operations that strain Russia’s power grid and evade taxes. Deputy Energy Minister Petr Konyushenko emphasized that the registry will enable authorities to pinpoint individuals consuming electricity for crypto mining, a sector that has caused energy shortages in regions like Siberia. Russia legalized crypto mining in August 2024, but only 30% of miners have registered with the Federal Tax Service, prompting stricter oversight.
The registry marks a significant step in formalizing Russia’s crypto industry, which has grown due to cheap energy but faces challenges from illegal setups. Recent crackdowns, including the discovery of a mobile mining farm in a truck in Buryatia, highlight the government’s focus on curbing energy theft. Authorities aim to reduce blackouts and stabilize the grid while ensuring miners contribute to tax revenues.
