26-5-2025 – Base network chief Jesse Pollak has detailed an ambitious technical framework prioritising performance metrics whilst embracing a measured approach to decentralisation challenges.
The blueprint establishes formidable performance benchmarks: transaction processing within 200 milliseconds, fees maintained below one penny, and system capacity of 200 transactions per second. These specifications position Base competitively in the Layer 2 ecosystem where efficiency increasingly dictates market adoption.
Pollak indicated that Base’s decentralisation journey would follow Vitalik Buterin’s phased implementation approach rather than pursuing immediate full decentralisation. This pragmatic timeline acknowledges the technical complexities involved in maintaining performance whilst distributing network control.
When questioned about current sequencer centralisation concerns, Pollak revealed plans to gradually expand the sequencer node infrastructure. However, he emphasised that delivering core attributes such as network neutrality and protection against transaction manipulation tactics takes precedence over rapid sequencer proliferation.
The strategy appears aligned with Buterin’s own technical philosophy. The Ethereum founder has previously argued that Layer 2 solutions should prioritise practical user protections—including rapid withdrawal mechanisms and censorship-resistant transaction channels—rather than pursuing decentralisation as an isolated objective disconnected from user experience.
