5-6-2025 – The Flappy Bird Foundation has announced a renewed push into Web3 integration, despite previous challenges in delivering its initial blockchain promises. This comes amid efforts to transform the iconic mobile game into a broader crypto-powered gaming ecosystem.
Telegram revival falters after missed token promises
Flappy Bird re-emerged last year via Telegram, featuring a play-to-earn mining mechanism tied to FLAP tokens on The Open Network (TON). However, community enthusiasm sharply declined after the mining phase ended in spring 2025 without token distribution, leaving many early adopters disillusioned.
The Android relaunch in April, via the Epic Games Store, notably excluded any Web3 elements, marking a shift to a more traditional mobile gaming model focused on ads and in-app purchases.
Foundation recommits to blockchain gaming
Despite setbacks, the Flappy Bird Foundation has reaffirmed its commitment to Web3 development, aiming to combine classic mobile gameplay with blockchain features in upcoming releases. In a recent statement, the Foundation outlined its broader vision:
“Our ultimate vision centres on constructing an ecosystem that encompasses the finest aspects of conventional gaming, intellectual property licensing, and Web3 advantages to establish a worldwide Flappy Bird brand.”
Planned features include a competitive gaming version, new reward mechanisms, and the launch of a Web3 IP protocol, though no tokenomics or release dates have been disclosed.
Coinbase’s base fuels speculation
Adding intrigue, Base, Coinbase’s Ethereum layer-2 network, reacted to Flappy Bird’s announcement by posting a screenshot of the “Web3 IP protocol launches” roadmap item, sparking speculation about a possible collaboration.
Flappy Bird’s official Telegram account quickly shared the post, but neither party has confirmed any formal partnership.
Separate paths for Web2 and Web3 players
Responding to both fan concerns and criticism from original creator Dong Nguyen, the Foundation pledged to maintain separate Web2 and Web3 paths.
In particular, the Android release on the Epic Games Store will remain crypto-free, a point the Foundation made clear:
“The Flappy Bird application available through Epic Games Store shall never incorporate Web3 components and relies exclusively on advertising revenue and in-application purchases.”
For users preferring to avoid blockchain features, Flappy Bird Publishing promises a conventional gameplay experience, ensuring long-time fans can still enjoy the game without Web3 involvement.
Future Web3 rollout remains unspecified
While the Foundation’s announcement signals a clear long-term ambition, no concrete roadmap or launch dates have been provided for its Web3 initiatives.
