1-5-2025 – A medical device innovator listed on Nasdaq, has deepened its commitment to Bitcoin, snapping up 165 BTC for $15.7 million between 25 and 29 April 2025. This acquisition, hot on the heels of a 111 BTC purchase for $10 million on 25 April, has swelled the firm’s Bitcoin treasury to 3,467 BTC, valued at over $327 million, positioning it just shy of the top 10 publicly traded companies holding the cryptocurrency.
A bold Bitcoin strategy inspired by a pioneer
Semler’s aggressive foray into Bitcoin mirrors the trailblazing approach of Strategy, guided by its outspoken chairman, Michael Saylor. The med-tech firm has embraced Saylor’s “BTC yield” metric, which gauges Bitcoin holdings against outstanding shares. Semler’s year-to-date BTC yield stands at an impressive 23.8%, outpacing MicroStrategy’s 13.7%, despite the latter holding over 2.5% of Bitcoin’s total supply. Saylor himself lauded Semler’s latest acquisition as “impressive,” a nod to the firm’s deft execution of its Bitcoin-centric strategy, which began last year and shows no signs of abating.
Fuelled by ambitious fundraising
To sustain its Bitcoin accumulation, Semler recently filed for a $500 million securities offering, earmarking a portion of the proceeds for further cryptocurrency purchases. This follows a significant $88.5 million Bitcoin investment in February, underscoring the firm’s relentless pursuit of digital assets. Chairman Eric Semler, unapologetic in his enthusiasm, declared on X, “We bleed orange,” a spirited nod to Bitcoin’s iconic hue. His defiance was palpable when addressing shareholders, urging detractors to “stop or sell” if they disagreed with the firm’s bold pivot, signalling an unwavering commitment to this unconventional treasury strategy.
Market challenges Amid strategic gambits
Despite its Bitcoin triumphs, Semler Scientific’s shares have faced headwinds, slipping 4.83% on Wednesday to close at $32.33. Year-to-date, the stock has shed over 40% of its value, reflecting investor unease or broader market dynamics. Yet, the firm’s Bitcoin treasury, now just outside the elite tier of corporate holders, underscores a calculated bet on cryptocurrency as a hedge or growth engine, even as traditional metrics flash caution.
Semler Scientific’s relentless Bitcoin acquisitions mark it as a formidable player in the evolving intersection of corporate finance and digital assets. By channelling MicroStrategy’s playbook while carving its own path, the company is redefining treasury management in the med-tech sector.
