2-5-2025 – The acclaimed series “Black Mirror” has unveiled plans for its official cryptocurrency token, accompanied by an unsettling artificial intelligence monitoring system.
At the heart of this Web3 venture lies Iris, a virtual overseer developed on the KOR Protocol—a platform enjoying backing from tech titans Animoca Brands, Niantic Labs, and Avalanche. This digital guardian scrutinises participants’ online behaviour, dispensing reputation scores in a manner eerily reminiscent of the series’ cautionary tales.
The initiative builds upon last year’s Smile Club experiment by crypto firm Pixelynx, which drew inspiration from the notorious “Nosedive” episode. Whilst that project eschewed cryptocurrency creation, it pioneered a social credit framework offering various incentives.
Participants must submit to comprehensive surveillance, with Iris analysing everything from their cryptocurrency trading patterns to their social media engagement. The system awards or penalises users through digital “badges” and “stains” recorded on their Social ID Card—a non-fungible token (NFT) serving as their digital passport.
The project’s documentation emphasises the need for reliable reputation tracking in decentralised platforms, suggesting traditional metrics fall short. Already, more than 13,000 users have registered for reputation IDs, despite the token’s blockchain platform remaining unannounced.
To participate, enthusiasts must connect their Ethereum or Solana digital wallets and link their X (formerly Twitter) accounts. The initiative promises future developments including AI mentorship, interactive challenges, and social wagering features.
The venture operates under licence from Banijay Brands, which manages intellectual property for various television franchises, including “Peaky Blinders”—another series venturing into blockchain gaming.
This latest foray into Web3 technology raises pointed questions about the intersection of entertainment, surveillance capitalism, and digital identity—themes that have long been central to “Black Mirror’s” cautionary narratives about technological advancement.
